UPDATE: 15th February 2023. Guy successfully came ashore in Cape Town and removed the barnacles. He then proceeded across the Southern Ocean for the next 50 days. Unfortunately, Sagarmatha had a knockdown, and the life raft was lost overboard. Guy decided to come to Hobart, where a replacement was found. The miss of the deadline, and once Guy crossed 140 degrees longitude means Guy is no longer part of the Golden Globe Race. He is however continuing his challenge to circumnavigate the globe solo. UPDATE: Thursday 3rd November, and Guy has decided to try and continue the Golden Globe Race; he is heading for Cape Town. Great news, and thank you to everyone for your support.
UPDATE: At 1500UTC on Friday 28th October 2922 Guy called the Golden Globe Race office to advise on his decision to head for Uruguay. He cannot remove massive amounts of fast growing barnacles. They are all over the hull and now growing on top of each other in the stern section. The boat is going slower rapidly. He has been over the side and tried everything but they are 2 inches long and will not move. He believes he will have to take the boat out of the water to remove Guy intends to then carry on his solo circumnavigation.

Hello Guy. I am following you for a long time now. Each of your adventures were a source of inspiration for me. (from the Jester Challenge in your red Contessa, your little Corribee to your Clipper Campaign…) Everytime you prooved to be an extraordinary mariner. I met you for the first time ‘life’ in LSO. Amidst the chaos you took the time to have a chat. All the energy you put in this campaign… the courageous Atlantic crossing and your incredible mast repair on Sao Miguel. I feel a part of your disappointment… although I’m convinced you never give up. Each time you came on land stronger than before. So will you do now!

Hi Guy, sorry to hear your plight with the troublesome hitch hiking crustaceans. I can’t imagine how you are feeling, disappointed for sure, but hope you can keep your spirits up and keep the dream of a solo circumnavigation alive. Wishing you favourable weather and seas to allow the next objective to be completed in good time. However it pans out I will be rooting for Team Guy. Of course you aren’t where you planned/wished/hoped you would be right now but I know you will take the positives on how fast you’ve sailed without those blasted barnacles.

You were a success just as soon as you slipped lines and we had the honour with Julie to push you off and then rush to the beach to wave frantically with hearts brimming with pride as you disappeared into the distance fulfilling your dream!
Darn those barnacles for slightly amending your plans 😠… but let’s just be clear my friend, ok, so maybe it’s not a Golden Globe Plaque this time as you were anticipating but a Chichester one is no less of an achievement – remember that!!
As you prepare and before you set off again, once those pesky hitchhikers are got rid of, just think back to all that love that was swirling all around you when you were preparing to leave back at race start, all that pride in you that was overflowing from all your family and friends – it’s not changed! Guy- its not gone anywhere, it’s with you still and remains with you as you continue on your amazing adventure, with you every time we look at that tracker or tune in to hear your voice message or a tweet!
So – onwards and upwards my friend! You’ve got this!!! Keep safe, sail well and don’t forget to enjoy the ride!!
